Bela is the appointed hour.
Bela (बेला, from Sanskrit velā — time, the appointed hour) is a Vedic-astrology timing product: a deterministic classical engine that computes the astrologically best moment to act — marry, move, launch, sign — and shows the reasoning rule by rule.
Why Bela exists
Every family that has planned a wedding knows the ritual: a pandit is consulted, a date emerges, and the reasoning stays inside the pandit's head. The internet version is worse — bare lists of "shubh dates" with no city, no ayanamsa, no rules, copied between sites until the errors agree with each other.
Bela is the shown-work alternative. We built a deterministic drik-ganit engine (Swiss Ephemeris, Lahiri ayanamsa) that scans the classical rule set — tithi, nakshatra, yoga, karana, Rahu Kaal, choghadiya, Panchaka, prohibited periods — and publishes every date with its full breakdown. You should never have to trust a bare score; with Bela, you never do.
The website carries the universal rules, free forever. The app adds the personal ones — Tara Bala and Chandra Bala against your birth star — because that is where generic lists honestly end.
What we optimise for
Determinism over eloquence
An LLM can write a convincing muhurat paragraph and get the tithi wrong. Our numbers come from an ephemeris, not a language model — the same input always gives the same answer.
Reasoning in the open
Every date carries its per-rule breakdown, the engine's gaps are stated on the methodology page, and the underlying data is downloadable under CC-BY. If we are wrong, you can check.
Classical fidelity
Rules from the Muhurta Chintamani tradition, computed with Lahiri ayanamsa and drik ganit — then cross-checked against the calendars families actually use.
Privacy by construction
The engine runs offline, on-device in the app. Birth details are never uploaded; we cannot leak what we never receive.
